Engineering Design Technologies, Inc. (EDT) provided Structural Engineering services for a portion of the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Terminal Apron design. The project presented several challenges. One challenge was that the apron was constructed over top of a massive earthwork project, which filled in the area surrounding the new airport terminal. Due to scheduling issues, the apron fill area was “contained” by a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall. Other challenges included the design of the wall, which included 90 degree corners, where tie‐backs overlapped from adjoining sections and interferences with other structures, where tie‐backs had to be linked to the obstruction.
