Engineering Design Technologies, Inc. (EDT) provided roadway design and construction, engineering and inspection (CEI) for widening and drainage improvements to Jefferson Avenue SW from the Birmingham City limits to 40th Street. The design included the addition of a center turn lane, curb and gutter, sidewalk, bridge culvert and two (2) signal upgrades. Utility relocations, profile grade adjustments and drainage improvements were also required due to the lane additions. Utilities impacted by this project included Alabama Power, Alabama Gas Corporation, City of Bessemer Water, AT&T, Birmingham Water Works, Brighthouse Cable and the Jefferson County Environmental Services Department. EDT coordinated with the impacted utilities, assisting in the development of their relocation plans and prepared all necessary documents required by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), including the appropriate SAHD forms for each particular utility. EDT provided CEI services for the roadway construction and utility relocations. CE&I services included overseeing and quantifying the pay items according to the ALDOT Construction Inspection procedures. Quantities observed included storm sewer, curb and gutter, traffic control, erosion control, permanent striping, pavement widening and utility adjustments. Additionally, EDT verified grades on storm sewer and provided compaction testing for storm sewer trenches and pavement. Finally, EDT oversaw the implementation of the contractor’s storm water management plan.
