Engineering Design Technologies, Inc. (EDT) provided roadway design and construction, engineering and inspection (CEI) for the widening and drainage improvements along Coalburg Road from Daniel Payne Drive to Corridor X. The scope of work included widening the existing two-lane section to a five-lane section with shoulders and ditches for approximately three (3) miles of roadway. EDT worked for the City of Birmingham with the involvement of ALDOT Construction Bureau and the FHWA. Federal matching funds were involved; therefore, ALDOT inspection and monitoring was required. CEI services included overseeing and quantifying the pay items according to the ALDOT Construction Inspection procedures. Quantities observed included storm sewer, curb and gutter, traffic control, erosion control, permanent striping, pavement widening and utility adjustments. Additionally, EDT verified grades on storm sewer and provided compaction testing for storm sewer trenches and pavement. Finally, EDT oversaw the implementation of the contractor’s storm water management plan. The construction value for the project was $7,500,000.
